Birkett and her twin sister, Margaret Isabella Spencer were born to Harry and Margaret Isabella Behn, in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England in 1921. She was educated at the Convent of LaSagesse, and the Sacred Heart Convent in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
