Marcellus Catchings, 26, was charged with attempt to commit first-degree assault, carrying a pistol without a permit, and assault of a public safety official, for the March 18, 2011 incident, according to court documents. All of the charges are felonies and he was held on a $2 million bond, the documents said.

In addition to the 15 years he will have to serve five years of special probation after that, Conklin said.

According to Conklin here is what happened during the original incident: officers were dispatched to South Pacific Street on a report of a man with a gun, and Officer William Garay found Catchings. The suspect attempted to shoot at the officer, however the Browning 9mm jammed allowing Garay to fire back and tackle Catchings, police said.

Police also suspected Catchings of being under the influence of PCP during the incident, the original report said. Garay and Ofc. Louis Vidal were both injured taking down the suspect, but not seriously, the original report said.

“It certainly put the community and our officers in grave danger,” Conklin said thinking back to the incident. He and other officers including Garay were in attendance for Catchings sentencing Thursday morning.
