Stamford Officer Fires Shot During Chase

Stamford Police Officer William Garay was involved in a shooting incident early Friday after responding to a report of a man waving around a handgun on South Pacific Street. No life-threatening injuries were reported.

Garay was one of the officers dispatched to the 500 block of South Pacific Street at about 1:45 a.m. There he encountered a man matching the description, later identified as 24-year-old Marcellus Catchings II, and told him to stop waving the gun, police said. Catchings did not stop and began to run, according to police. Garay chased him. During the chase, Catchings turned and pointed a handgun at Garay, according to police. In response, Garay fired one round at Catchings and missed.

Almost simultaneously, Officer Louie Vidal, in a patrol car, cut off Catchings. Catchings fell to the ground, where a fight and struggle with officers ensued. Catchings subsequently was taken into custody. During the struggle, Garay injured his left shoulder and right hand, and Vidal injured his right hand and face. The officers were treated and released from Greenwich Hospital.

Catchings had in his possession a Browning 9mm single action handgun, according to police. The handgun apparently malfunctioned because of a double feed jam, police said. In addition, according to police, Catchings appeared to be under the influence of PCP or some other drug.

The police response to this incident seems to have been quick and professional. What do you think of the police response to his incident?
