Valentine, 62, will officially be introduced at a news conference Tuesday. He will succeed Donald Cook, who is retiring. Sacred Heart announced the hiring in a press release Friday afternoon.

Valentine was fired as manager of the Boston Red Sox in October after only year on the job. He also had Major League stints as manager with the Texas Rangers and New York Mets. He also managed in Japan and had a 10-year playing career in the majors, beginning with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1969.

Aside from his role as baseball manager, the position would be the first significant administrative position for Valentine. He served as Stamford's director of public safety for less than a year in 2011 before joining the Red Sox.
