Stamford Student Picked For Tennis Tournament

STAMFORD, Conn. – Terry McGrath, a fifth grader at Stamford's Our Lady Star of the Sea School, was selected by U.S. Tennis Association New England to represent the region in the “Capital Clash,” a 10-and-under intersectional team event against the USTA Mid-Atlantic, USTA Middle States and USTA Eastern sections. The event will take place in College Park, MD, from Oct. 19 through 21.

Three boys and three girls from each section are selected to represent their region in the competition and McGrath was one of two boys from Connecticut to be chosen. He reached the No. 1 ranking last year in the Boys 10-and-under division in New England and has since begun competing in 12-and-under events. McGrath has won four 12-and-under events so far in 2012 and is currently ranked No. 39 in New England.

He also teamed up with his father, Lawrence, last April to defend their title at the New Haven Open Family Classic at Shippan Racquet Club, a parent-child tournament featuring some of the best junior players in the region.

McGrath, 10, was introduced to tennis at the age of five and enrolled in the junior programs at Shippan Racquet Club three years ago. He was also part of the 12-and-under team at the club, which won state championships last August. Lawrence and his mother, Iwona, credit the work of Shippan Racquet coaches Charl van der Merwe and Daniel Bezman with Terry’s success on court.
