“I am excited to launch the MYLC program at Westhill High School and am confident the Westhill community will embrace the inspirational and educational outreach of the MYLC members on topics most relevant to our school,” Westhill High School Principal Camille Figluizzi said. “I am especially proud of those students who have stepped up to the challenge of leading the WHS MYLC Chapter and to serve as its Executive Committee.”

The local program will be run by the Stamford Youth Services Bureau, whose mission is to promote safe schools and communities with an emphasis on developing strategies that advocate for causes that matter to youth.

Westhill students interested in learning about the council attended an informational meeting with the Stamford Youth Services Bureau in December. The Youth Services Bureau recently reviewed applications from those students applying to serve on the Executive Committee. The following six students have been chosen as executive committee members:

  • Ariana Venneri, sophomore
  • Julia DiBiccari, junior
  • Emma Gargiulo, junior
  • Natasja Haughton, sophomore
  • Isabella Petrini, sophomore
  • Austin Nardi, junior

“I truly believe if kids/teens take a stand, people will follow,” said Petrini. “I don’t want to sit around and complain about things I don’t like. I am one to get up and do something about it. I believe that is the best way to solve some of the social issues we face today.”

The Westhill MYLC chapter’s first all-member meeting will be scheduled for early February.

“MYLC is designed so each chapter has the opportunity to identify and focus on a social issue most important to their community,” said Bob Kocienda, MYLC project coordinator at Stamford High School. “The executive committee will follow an established research strategy and timeline in order to select the issue most relevant to Westhill and then will begin to plan their approach.”

The council is one of the largest youth activism organizations in Connecticut, with a chapter in Stamford High School and sister programs at Brian McMahon High School in Norwalk and at Greenwich High School.
