Not so for Geri Galasso, a middle school math specialist at Our Lady of Fatima-Wilton.

On Dec. 11, students, parents and faculty at the diocesan school held a pink day pep rally in support of “Mrs. G,” the 8th-grade homeroom teacher who is undergoing weekly chemotherapy.

“Mrs. Galasso has an amazing spirit and is a fantastic example to the children, a true heroine,” said Principal Stanley Steele. “She is fighting this deadly disease, teaching full time and continuing to provide after-school support as needed. Her dedication to Fatima for over a decade has provided students with excellence in academics, and the rare gifts of genuine kindness and caring. The students have been the beneficiary of something very special.”

At the pep rally, the children surprised Galasso by wearing special T-shirts and posting a banner that read “Team OLF + Mrs. G.”

Alumni sent in photos of themselves dressed in pink or in breast cancer T-shirts.

Nineteen alumni at Wilton High School, a student teacher and Galasso’s daughter Samantha also wore shirts in support of the beloved teacher.

“It is fitting that the community and alumni have banded together in this show of moral support and genuine appreciation,” Steele said. “Mrs. Galasso and the entire Fatima faculty are what make this school an exceptional educational environment and a nurturing community.”
