4 Finalists Named For Stamford Teacher Of The Year Award

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Four teachers of nine nominees are now finalists for the Stamford Public Schools Teacher of the Year awards.

Four Stamford Public School teachers have been selected as finalists for the Teacher of the Year. They will next have to submit a video for review. The selection will be made at a May 4 celebration.

The finalists are Jennifer Bernstein, Apples Early Childhood Center; Vibha Khetan, Westhill High School; Vincent Urbanowski, Academy of Information Technology and Engineering; and Dave Wooley, Westhill High School.

The nominees including, Joanne Floyd, Cloonan; Deanna Molnar, Northeast; Ashley Porter-Collins, Westhill High School; George Rigakos, Stillmeadow; and Melissa Valendra, Cloonan had to submit essays and be interviewed by a committee.

For the next phase, the finalists will submit a 30-minuted taped class lesson for review by the committee.

The Teacher of the Year and Spotlight on Teachers Awards Program Committee has also chosen the following group of teachers and teams of teachers as this year’s Spotlight on Teachers Award winners:

Nominations were solicited from January through early February. The Teacher of the Year and Spotlight Awards Program Committee members evaluated all submissions based on the following criteria: Outstanding Teaching, Exceptional Student Support, Exemplary Community Involvement, and Positive Influence on School Culture. From among those submissions, the committee chose 22 individuals to be honored with a Spotlight Award, as well as the more exclusive group to be considered for Teacher of the Year nominees
