UPDATED 6:01p.m.: U.S Sen. Joseph Lieberman will not seek a fifth term in 2012, both the Washington Post and the New York Times are reporting.
Lieberman will hold a news conference Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. at the Stamford Marriott.
Former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz, a Democrat from Middletown, announced Tuesday her intention to run for the Senate seat, which Lieberman has held for four terms since his election in 1988.
Lieberman, an independent who caucuses with the Senate Democrats, lost the Democratic nomination in 2006 after a primary defeat to Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont.
Lieberman is a Stamford native and currently lives in Stamford. Numerous published reports have speculated that Lieberman, 68, won't seek a fifth term.
Lieberman's Senate press secretary, Erika Masonhall, wouldn't elaborate Tuesday but was quoted on the Hartford Courant website as saying: "After many thoughtful conversations with family and friends over the last several months, Senator Lieberman made a decision about his future over the holidays, which he plans to announce on Wednesday."
Lieberman's poll numbers have dropped in recent years as he has aligned himself with Republicans on several issues, including his endorsement of John McCain's run for president and his opposition to President Obama's health care initiatives.
