The incident took place around 7:46 a.m. Thursday when Hartford Police patrol units responded to a report that a school bus was struck from behind by a Ford Edge and the driver then fled the scene, Hartford police said.
The school bus had one student aboard at the time of the incident who was not injured, they added.
An investigation into the crash found that the fleeing vehicle was a 2015 Ford Edge reported stolen from Waterbury on Tuesday, police added.
A short time later, canvassing officers observed the vehicle being operated in the Behind the Rocks area of the city. The vehicle had suffered heavy front end damage. Officers began following the vehicle from a distance while broadcasting the direction of travel to area units.
Additional patrol units and ATU Detectives responded and a motor vehicle stop was successfully made in the area of 210 Exeter St. The driver was taken into custody without incident and later identified as a 16-year-old juvenile, they added.
The juvenile was charged with numerous offenses including larceny, operating a motor vehicle without a license and various other charges.
He was released to the custody of a guardian.
