Heisze Chan, 36, was found unresponsive in a second-floor bedroom at her smoke-filled home at 109 Webbs Hill Road shortly after first responders arrived after the 7:39 a.m. call, police said.

Chan was pulled from the home by a family member and first responders, police said. But all attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at 7:56 a.m., police said.

In a press release issued Monday afternoon, Stamford Police said they believed Chan committed suicide. Investigators removed several items from the home that pointed to that theory, police said.

The house sustained minor damage but had significant smoke damage, police said.

Her body was transported to the State Medical Examiner's Officer for an autopsy, which was to be performed on Tuesday. The investigation remained active, police said.

Chan was arrested in April and charged with first-degree criminal trespass and sixth-degree larceny in connection with a shoplifting incident at a CVS in Greenwich, police said. She was eventually found hiding in a dumpster when she was arrested, police said.

Officers were led to the area where she was hiding after a taxi driver arrived on the scene, saying he was supposed to pick up a woman but couldn't find her, police said.
