Witnesses told police that a man approached a group of people on Henry Street and fired multiple shots at about 11:30 p.m., Lt. Diedrich Hohn said. During a canvass of the area, police found a man hiding behind a garbage can on Cedar Street, about 100 yards from the scene, and a loaded .9-mm handgun about five feet from him, the lieutenant said.
Investigators had the suspect, Howard Parker, 18, who first identified himself as “Davon Parker,” take a gunshot residue test and had a hit that he did fire a gun, Hohn said. The ammunition in the gun found near Parker also matched a shell casing found at the scene, he said.
No injuries were reported from the shooting, Hohn said.
Police have placed a parole hold on Howard to keep him in custody and intend to charge him with third-degree criminal trespass, interfering with police, second-degree forgery, criminal impersonation, possession of a pistol by a convicted felon, first-degree reckless endangerment, and unlawful discharge of a firearm, Hohn said. Bond of $150,000 has been placed on him as well, the lieutenant said.
As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, Hohn did not know why Howard shot at the group or whether it was related to any other shootings that have taken place in the city. “We’re looking into everything right now,” he said, adding that Parker was still being interviewed and the case was still ongoing.
