Spaulding, who has more than 30 years of experience at various levels, said he still has a desire to do what is best for the city. He added that although there have been losses in fire over the years, many more lives have been saved because of measures taken by the fire marshals and other city officials.

“I plan to continue to work with each and every one of you to keep this record alive,” he said after being sworn in to his new position by Mayor Michael Pavia. At the ceremony were several city officials, including former Chief Fire Marshal Barry Callahan, as well as Spaulding’s family.

“When I say good people, he exemplifies what it means to be a good person,” Pavia said. He said he was assured of his decision to appoint Spaulding after reading over his resume and letter, which exemplified his dedication to the city.

“We are grateful and thankful to you Charles Spaulding,” the Rev. Robert Perry, a fire commissioner, said, adding that he was delighted to be a part of the selection process.

Stamford Fire Chief Antonio Conte remembered one fire where Spaulding tried to get ahead of him because Conte had kids and Spaulding did not. Once inside the blaze, Conte said he almost fell through the floor but was saved by Spaulding.

The position has been left vacant since Callahan retired.
