The number of citations written might not be in yet, but just the presence of officers from the New Canaan and Norwalk police departments in the Silvermine area let motorists know it's time to slow down.

"Anytime we can be visible to the public makes for a successful enforcement," said New Canaan Deputy Chief John DiFederico. "The number of tickets we issue isn't as important as slowing down drivers and getting them off their cell phones."

The detail, from 8 to 10 a.m. on Thursday,  was held for exactly that reason: safety, he added.

Speeders and reckless drivers can often be found in the high-traffic area, especially during peak hours.

DiFederico said the two department's ultimate goal in holding the dual enforcement efforts is to slow people down and concentrate on driving.

"Anytime we can encourage people to slow down is a good thing," he added.
