Cesar Olivero, 34, of 529 W. 179th St., Apt. 2A, New York City, was charged with first-degree assault causing serious physical injury, first-degree burglary, carrying a dangerous weapon, home invasion and third-degree assault. He was held on $250,000 bond.
Olivero and the 32-year-old woman broke up a couple of weeks ago, and he left their Stamford home and moved to New York, police said.
The woman and her new boyfriend, a 45-year-old man, returned to her Camp Avenue residence just after 11 p.m. Thursday, police said. When they entered, Olivero jumped out and pushed her to the floor, police said. He then used a 15-inch handsaw to attack the 45-year-old man, said police Capt. Richard Conklin.
"(The suspect) is swinging the saw almost like a tomahawk over his head," Conklin said.
As the victim raised his arms to defend himself, the saw cut into his left hand and sliced it open as the saw was drawn back, Conklin said.
He was also struck over his head, causing wounds that later had to be stapled together, Conklin said.
The victim was transported to Stamford Hospital but was transferred to the Westchester Medical Center due to his wounds, police said.
The woman called 911, police said. When officers arrived, they ordered Olivero to come down the stairs with his hands showing, police said.
Olivero told officers that "he is assisting the victim with his injuries and is unarmed," Conklin said. But he did surrender peacefully, Conklin said.
The woman suffered minor injuries, Conklin said.
