Scott Smith, 49, of Fairfield, was arrested around 12:15 p.m., Monday, Aug. 20, after a Westport Police officer noticed a vehicle pulled to the side of the road in the area of Green Farms Road, Westport Poice said.

Multiple bags of chips were found scattered in the roadway just east of the vehicle’s location. The officer stopped to check on the operator who advised that he believed he hit something, police said.

After getting out of the vehicle, Smith dislodged a box of individually packaged snack mix from underneath the front of his vehicle. While doing so, police said, Smith displayed signs of being intoxicated.

Smith also had a distinct odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath and refused to perform a field sobriety test, police added.

He was taken into custody and transported to headquarters where a breath test was administered and found him to be above the legal limit. Smith was charged with DUI and released after posting a $500 bond.
