STAMFORD, Conn. -- A witness to a fire called 911, which gave firefighters enough time to extinguish it quickly before any damage was caused Monday night, the Stamford Fire Department said in a press release.

The caller was walking on Dock Street and noticed the fire on the second floor of an abandoned building at 97 Manhattan St.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and bring it under control in 15 minutes. There was no one in the building, and no firefighters were injured.

“We are grateful to the 911 caller who took the time to call this in and direct fire units to the correct building,” Deputy Fire Chief Eric Lorenz said. “Given some more time, this fire could have grown into a major fire.”
