Nikolla Vlash, 86, Former Stamford Resident

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Nikolla Vlash, formerly of Stamford, died Monday, Jan. 18. He was 86.

Born in Albania, Vlash was a freedom fighter in Albania, fighting against the Communist regime. He immigrated to the United States, with his wife Terezina in the 1950s.

Vlash began his career as a machinist at Conde Nast through the 1960s.

He is survived by his daughter Irene Ropicki and her husband John of Stamford and Lisa Vlash of Wilton; his daughter-in-law Leidi Vlash of Bethel; and grandchildren Jeffery Vlash, Brian Ropicki, Vanessa Ropicki, Steven Vlash, Theresa Vlash and Michael Vlash.

Vlash was predeceased by his wife, Terezina, and his sons Zef and Mark.

Visiting hours will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9: 20 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22, proceeding to St. Mary's, 566 Elm St., Stamford, for a 10 a.m. Mass. Interment will be at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Rockrimmon Road, also in Stamford.
