Avery was born on March 24, 1947, in Baltimore, Md., to James and Helen Johnson Avery.
Avery is survived by two daughters, Darlene Avery-Lamar and her husband, Donnell and Charlene Hall; two sons; John P. Jordan, Jr. and Anthony Avery, Sr., 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, a sister, Ruby Johnson, and longtime companion Roy Simpson.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Sharon.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. at Downer Funeral Home, followed by a service of celebration at Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, at 29 Grove St. in Stamford.
Interment will be private.
