STAMFORD, Conn. – Carl C. "Collie" Galasso Sr., of Stamford, died Monday, April 25. He was 98.

Born on April 3, 1918, he was the son of Angelo Galasso and Angelina Mancusi. He grew up and lived his entire life in Stamford.

He was married for 73 years to Mildred (D'Agostino) Galasso and together they had four children, Carl Galasso Jr. (deceased), Angela Galasso (Donald Hartman), Jacqueline Schonberg (Peter), and Lucy Galasso (Dr. Alan McCollom).

He was a private first class in World War II and fought in the largest battle of the war, The Battle of the Bulge, in the Ardennes region of Belgium.

Most of his career was spent at Birch Meadows Corp., where he was the superintendent of a large estate, where he architected and maintained lawns and gardens. His work was featured in Bartlett Tree Catalogues.

His lifetime hobby was pigeon racing. He founded the Stamford Pigeon Club and held the position of vice president for many years. He genetically produced a line of pigeons that were bred for long-distance flying. Contributions to this gene pool came from the lofts of Queen Elizabeth and Benito Mussolini. He tirelessly trained his flock and was the recipient of many awards and trophies.

He was grandfather to Gena Galasso Russo (Brian), Torrie Marie Hartman, Jordan Galasso McCollom (Tracy), Steven Perry Schonberg; great-grandfather to Logan Carl Russo, Leah Grace McCollom, Reid William Russo and Owen James McCollom; and uncle to many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Daniel Galasso; and sisters, Lucy Posidento and Catherine Galasso.

Calling hours are Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the Lacerenza Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8 Schuyler Ave., Stamford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, April 29 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 37 Schuyler Ave., Stamford.
