Families gearing up to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday are being warned to exercise caution in the wake of multiple terrorist attacks and threats in recent weeks.

Just days before Thanksgiving, the U.S. State Department issued a Worldwide Travel Alert for American citizens regarding the possible risks due to the increase in recent threats from Middle Eastern terrorist units.

According to the worldwide travel alert issued through the State Department, “Attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics, using conventional and non-conventional weapons and targeting both official and private interests.”

In advance of the holiday season, the State Department issued several tips for travelers looking to leave the area. The tips including using extra vigilance when on public transportation and to be aware of immediate surroundings when in a large or open space.

The travel alert has been extended through Feb. 24. It said ISIL, al-Qaida, Boko Haram and other terrorist groups continue to plan attacks in multiple regions.

According to AAA, as many as 50 million people may be traveling 50 or more miles for the holidays, buoyed by the lowest gas prices in nearly a decade.

Other tips from the State Department included exercising particular caution during the busy holiday season and monitoring local media sources to be kept apprised of any nearby, immediate threats. There is also a registry for travelers at the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.
