"That's a monsoon," he joked about the rainy weather. "No one's coming out in that."
Tuesday's heavy rain dampened people's enthusiasm to walk to a store or jump in a car to go shopping, Patel said.
"On a day like this we don't get many people coming in. I think everyone is just trying to get home."
People do come in the day before a storm to stock up in items, he said.
But not many people decided to brave the rain and wind on Tuesday. The National Weather Service said that as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, 2.64 inches of rain had fallen on Stamford. Norwalk recorded 2.8 inches while Fairfield had 2.99 inches of rain as of 4:50 p.m.
The few people who did make it out had to deal with fast-rushing waters in low-lying areas of the city as well as high winds.
A couple of abandoned and damaged umbrellas were spotted on city streets after they lost their battle with the wind weather.
Patel said stormy days can give small businessmen like himself time to catch up on office work. But he joked that it's like snow days for school children, some are more motivated to do their homework than others.
But there is a bright spot to the bad weather, said Patel, noting people at home might have a couple of glasses of wine and need to replenish their stock when the weather improves.
That improvement may not come until the end of the week. More rain, and even snow showers, are in the forecast for Stamford for Wednesday and Thursday as another storm moves through the region.
