“The goal of this drill, which is based on a scenario of an anthrax release, is to test the ability of the Health Department to quickly distribute emergency life-saving medications in response to public health emergencies,” said Elizabeth Rivera-Rodriguez the Department of Health and Social Services, Public Health Emergency Response coordinator.

Parents, students and residents are advised to not be alarmed by the presence of emergency vehicles for the drill, and that there is no real emergency at Stamford High School. Classes and other school activities will not be affected by the drill.

“The Stamford Health Department and the Office of Public Safety, Health and Welfare will be practicing Stamford’s capability to protect the health and safety of Stamford residents during this hypothetical health crisis,” said Mayor David Martin. “This mass prophylaxis exercise demonstrates the City of Stamford’s commitment to ensure the health and safety of our residents.”

The oral antibiotic dispensation drill runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is conducted in collaboration with Stamford Public Schools, Stamford Police Department, the Connecticut Department of Public Health, Region 1 Local Health Departments, Stamford Medical Reserve Corps Volunteers and Stamford CERT (Community Emergency Response Team).

Elected officials are invited to observe the drill from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Members of the public can participate as prophylaxis candidates.
