He starts Jan. 27. Nyenhuis is the current president and chief executive officer of MAP International, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting health in impoverished people around the world. He has held that position for 14 years.

“Michael’s deep knowledge of global health will be very valuable as we expand upon the program growth realized during Curt Welling’s tenure," said Dean Maglaris, chairman of AmeriCares' Board of Directors, in a statement.

Under Welling’s leadership, AmeriCares became the world’s leading organization for delivering donated medicines and medical supplies. Last year, the group provided more than $500 million in aid to more than 90 countries, including enough medicine to fill 14 million prescriptions.

“Following in the footsteps of AmeriCares founder Bob Macauley and Curt Welling is a great honor,” Nyenhuis said in a release. "I look forward to bringing my experience in global health and my expertise in leveraging financial donations with donated medicines and medical supplies to AmeriCares.”

Nyenhuis earned a master of business administration from Emory University and a bachelor of arts in communications and media from the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay.
