They also run a sports rehabilitation facility at Chelsea Piers and outpatient surgery at the Tully Health Center.

The opening ceremony Monday was led by Brian G. Grissler, President and CEO of Stamford Health. He was joined by Louis A. Shapiro, President and CEO of the Hospital for Special Surgery.

The new 40,000-square-foot unit encompasses the entire fifth floor of the new Stamford Hospital, allowing a greater number of inpatient orthopedic surgical cases. About 50 staff members are being hired to oversee patient care on this floor.

In February, the two organizations announced their collaboration to advance the orthopedic services available, beginning with outpatient orthopedic services performed at Stamford Health’s Tully Health Center.

“We opened our new hospital just a year ago and are pleased to see this strategic and innovative relationship with HSS already become a reality,” said Grissler. “Building upon our recognized levels of service, Magnet status nursing and our new hospital, this collaboration will further elevate the level of orthopedic services for residents across the region.”

Under the collaboration, Stamford Health adopted HSS best clinical practices across the entire orthopedic surgery line.

Complementing these practices is Stamford Health’s philosophy of providing the finest care across the entire healthcare spectrum – from prevention and wellness to diagnosis, treatment and ongoing support.

“HSS has had a presence in Connecticut for nearly 20 years and we are pleased to have created a collaboration with Stamford Health to enable both organizations to better serve patients, right in their own backyards,” said Shapiro. “The collaboration through HSS Orthopedics at Stamford Health ensures the patient care provided here meets our uncompromising standards, with the convenience and comfort of the gorgeous new Stamford Hospital building.”

To date, HSS Orthopedics at Stamford Health provided only outpatient surgeries at Tully Health Center. The new inpatient unit consists of two operating rooms, four pre-op beds, 12 recovery beds and 19 inpatient rooms as well as a rehabilitation gym.

HSS has been ranked No.1 for orthopedics in the U.S. for the past eight consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report. HSS has provided pre-, post- and non-surgical care in Connecticut since 2001.

The 20,000-square-foot HSS Outpatient Center at Chelsea Piers Connecticut continues to provide these services as well as the neighboring HSS Sports Rehab at Chelsea Piers Connecticut, provided by Stamford Health.
