STAMFORD, Conn. — It turned out that Gov. Dannel Malloy had more to celebrate in Stamford on Monday than just the groundbreaking of the expansion at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center.

Malloy hijacked the program at the family-favorite spot in Stamford briefly to announce that this first grandchild — a girl — had been born hours earlier at Stamford Hospital.

Her name is Grace — no middle name chosen yet. The governor lost his bid for the name — "Dannel — whether it was a boy or a girl."

His son Dannel Jr. and his wife are doing well after the birth at about 3:30 a.m. Monday, Malloy said.

The governor returned to the hospital for some family time after the groundbreaking ceremony.

Malloy, who was mayor of Stamford for 14 years before he became governor, had announced the impending birth earlier this summer at the groundbreaking for the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Skating Center and Fountain in Mill River Park in downtown Stamford.
