Former Norwalk resident Miguel Angel Arcos-Vasquez - also known as Dimas Fernando Herrarte - pleaded guilty in New Haven District Court to illegally reentering the country following several failed attempts. He is a legalized citizen of either Mexico or Guatemala, John Durham, the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut announced.
According to Durham. Arcos-Vasquez, 26, illegally entered the country in or before 2014. In March of that year, he was arrested in Stratford for an alleged burglary. The next month, he failed to appear in court and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Police said that in January 2016, Arcos-Vasquez attempted to enter the country three times through Texas, but was rebuffed each time. on Jan. 24 last year, Arcos-Vasquez was arrested by police in Stamford on a threatening charge.
Later that month, under his alias, he was arrested in Norwalk for selling drugs and criminal possession of a firearm.
Arcos-Vasquez has been detained since his latest arrest, and the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement was notified.
Arcos-Vasquez pleaded guilty in New Haven to one count of illegally reentering the U.S. after being deported.
He is due to be sentenced on Nov. 14, when he will face a maximum term of two years in prison. Immigration officials are in the process of determining which country Arcos-Vasquez is a citizen of. He faces deportation upon the completion of his prison sentence.
