Work to replace them began this week, the Connecticut Department of Transportation has announced.

The project consists of the replacement of platforms along Track 3 - New York Bound - and Track 4 - New Haven bound. The work includes guardrails and handrails, bearings, an eastbound platform shelter, illumination upgrades, and minor appurtenances, said the DOT.

Stage 1 of the project, the demolition phase, was set to start on Monday. It will be followed by stages 2 to 4 subsequently, with a projected completion date of Nov. 30, 2018. This will include winter shutdown from 2017-2018, according to the DOT.

Manafort Brothers Inc. is the contractor on the DOT project at a cost of $6,271,000.00. The contract was awarded Oct. 28, 2016, the DOT said.

The South West quadrant at the commuter parking lot will be closed starting March 27, for the work to replace the existing platform.

All traffic and parking will be shifted to the southeast quadrant of the commuter parking lot.

There will be signs directing train riders to access the open section of the platform and the commuter parking lot.
