STAMFORD, Conn. Stamford wont have fireworks after all. Mayor Michael Pavia and sponsor Its Relevant have decided to cancel Thursdays Celebrate Stamford event.
Irene has taken away our fireworks, Pavia said during a Tuesday news conference. The mayor explained that it would not be in the citys best interest to assign employees to work the fireworks who are currently helping Stamford in the cleanup effort after Tropical Storm Irene. He pointed to the stress the police department, fire department and operations office has been under since the storm.
Our primary concern is to restore power, make roadways accessible and safe, and remove all remaining storm debris, Pavia said in a statement.
Harlan Neugeboren, chief executive officer for Its Relevant, agreed with the mayors decision. Considering the ferocity and magnitude of the storm and the damage it has caused throughout Stamford, including Kosciuszko Park, we feel it would be best for the city at this time, he said in the statement.
No makeup date has been scheduled.
