Scarsdale High School seniors Scottie Kerridge and Sarah Saxena will spend five weeks at SoundWaters’ Coastal Education Center, forgoing their final few weeks of classes to work in a real-world business environment before heading off to college.

At SoundWaters, Kerridge and Saxena are working daily to educate elementary and middle school students about the science of the Long Island Sound. Under the eyes of the organization’s educators, the two have worked with nearly 200 students from 13 elementary schools both in the lab and out in the field.

“The SoundWaters High School Internship Program is a model for professional development and environmental stewardship,” Vice President of Education Alisha Milardo stated. “Students develop their job and leadership skills on a daily basis as they perform scientific experiments, aquarium maintenance and assist with our STEM programs.”

Saxena praised SoundWaters for providing her the opportunity to kick start her post high school career.

“SoundWaters is an amazing organization and I am lucky to have the internship. I get to work outside around the water with the kids and help them learn about the Long Island Sound and how to protect the environment,” she added. “I enjoy helping the students, but I’m also learning a lot about the Long Island Sound myself and how a non-profit (organization) works.”
