Seniors Open Their Hearts To Companionship At Stamford Speed Dating Event

STAMFORD/DARIEN, Conn. — Christina Crain enjoyed watching seniors in Rochester, N.Y., speed date in a first-of-its-kind event documented by the film “The Age of Love.” And then she had a thought.

“I watched it, and I said, ‘Wow, this is so cool, and wouldn’t that be great to try to do this in our community?’” said Crain, the director of Stamford's senior center.

On Friday, nearly 30 people between the ages of 70 and 90 got the chance to meet each other in a well-decorated room facing Holly Pond at The Waters Edge at Giovanni’s in Darien.

The event placed men and women into pairs. Every five minutes, the emcee rang a bell and the men moved to another table to meet another woman.

After each pair met, participants wrote a list of who they would like to see again. If two participants wrote down each other’s names, the event organizer would provide each participant with the other participant’s contact information.

And then? “It’s up to them to make the next move,” Crain said. “They take it from there.”

Crain said speed dating can be a “mysterious thing” — especially for seniors. But she hoped that the movie, which some of the event attendees had watched at a previous event, demystified the process.

While some attendees were understandably nervous, Carol O’Brien was relaxed. O’Brien, who lives in the area, said she heard about the event at the senior center and thought it might be a good way to meet an active man who likes sports.

“I figured, ‘Why not? There might be some nice guy out there who likes the Patriots',” she said, adding that she is looking for someone who enjoys movies, football, the Red Sox and the casino. “Other than that, they have to be fun, fun, fun. I don’t want any couch potatoes.”

The event was held by the Stamford Senior Center and SilverSource Inc. More information on the Stamford Senior Center is available here, and more information on SilverSource is available here.
