New Movie '42' Tells Story Of Stamford's Jackie Robinson

STAMFORD, Conn. — On Friday, the movie “42,” which portrays how former Stamford resident Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and become the first African American to play Major League Baseball, will hit movie screens across the country.

The film stars Chadwick Boseman as Robinson and Harrison Ford as Brooklyn Dodgers owner Branch Rickey, who signed Robinson, according to the movie’s official website. The film is just over two hours long and is rated PG-13.

Several readers on the The Stamford Daily Voice’s Facebook page are looking forward to the movie.

“Yes because the man is a legend,” Rocco Buchetto said.

“Absolutely!!!!” Janice Zannino said.

“Looks like a great movie –can’t wait to check it out,” Mr. Bokay Flowers & Greenhouse said.

Robinson’s widow, Rachel, and his children Sharon and David, were all pleased with how the film turned out, a New York Daily News report said. Rachel Robinson also complimented Boseman and Nicole Beharie, who plays Rachel in the movie, on their research and dedication to their roles in the Daily News report.

First Lady Michelle Obama has also supported the making of the movie by holding a workshop with the movie’s stars and Rachel Robinson for high school and college students at the White House. The First Lady’s comments can be viewed on the White House website here.

Major League Baseball will also continue its annual tribute to Robinson and his legacy in the game by having every player where number 42 on April 15, the anniversary of his first game in 1947. The number 42 was retired throughout the league in 1997.
