SYAP Music Director Christian Capocaccia was considering the idea from the moment he inherited the orchestra from maestro Salvatore Princiotti in 2012.
After four years of work preparing his orchestra for the opportunity, Capocaccia said he knows the time is right.
“They are ready to take on the challenge of performing on a world class stage," Capocaccia said. "It will be a milestone for us and it will motivate the students to want to strive for more.”
Greenwich Central Middle School Eighth-grade student Shun Sakai postponed a class trip to Washington D.C. for the opportunity to perform on one of the world's biggest stages.
“I know that I am missing out on one day of the class trip by performing at Carnegie Hall, but it’s worth it," Sakai said. "Carnegie Hall is a world renowned concert hall. I wouldn’t miss this opportunity for the world.”
At Carnegie, the three orchestras that make up SYAP — the Young Artists Philharmonic, Young Peoples Symphony and Young String Ensemble — will perform a range of orchestral pieces including works by Rossini, Dvorak and Copland.
Brian Kaether, a Stamford resident and sophomore at Westhill High School has been selected as the concertmaster for the performance. In addition, Lisa Tannebaum, a Stamford-based harpist, will be playing a Debussy piece with the Young Artists Philharmonic.
