Kozol is an advocate for children of poverty whose latest book is "Fire in the Ashes: Twenty-Five Years Among the Poorest Children in America." He is known for “laying bare the savage inequalities inflicted upon children for no reason but the accident of being born into poverty.”

"When I talk with children about their daydreams and fantasies, about heaven, about animals and other gentle aspects of their yearning, I'm not asking those questions as an ingenious interviewer. I'm asking because I really want to know the answer. Sometimes I feel I almost conspire with the children to imagine a better world than the one we're stuck with" he has said. (The Plough, 1996)

"Fire in the Ashes" is a narrative that follows a group of children in a destitute community out of their infancy and elementary grades, through their secondary years, into their late teens, and beyond.

Some of their stories are painful and heart-breaking, but others are dramatic tributes to the resilience and audacity of courageous children who refuse to be defeated by the obstacles they face and find their way at last to unexpected and triumphal victories.

The conversation will start at 8 p.m., followed by Q & A, book signing, and wine and cheese reception. The cost for the event is $10.
