STAMFORD, Conn. — After five years of working at a dog day care center on Stamford’s West Side, Wayne Thornley decided to take over ownership and start Doggie Daze Day Care.

Doggie Daze lets the animals roam free between an outdoor pen and indoor facilities depending on the weather. There are no crates at Doggie Daze.

The dogs range in age from puppy to adult and are all different sizes and breeds. They can decide if they want to play and who they want to play with, Thornley said. And if they do not want to play, they can find a place to be alone as well, he said.

“If they want a ball thrown they can get that,” Thornley said of the dogs, “They can be themselves.”

He also said his staff really cares for the dogs and provide attention to each one, which allows the day care to have dogs with special needs. He explained that one of the dogs was scared of men and still nervous around strangers, and others are very active.

The day care is open Monday through Friday, except for federal holidays, from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Owners can drop off their dogs from 6:30 to 10 a.m. and pick them up any time from 3:30 to 7 p.m., however exceptions can be made, Thornley said.

Before using the center, Thornley puts the dogs through a screening process to make sure there are no aggression issues that may cause a problem for it and the other animals. After the dog passes the screening, owners can bring their animals without making an appointment.

Pricing is as follows: One dog is $33 per day, or multiple dogs are $30 per day per dog; 10-day packages are $300 for one dog and $270 per dog for multiple dogs; and 20-day packages are $540 for one dog and $480 per dog for multiple dogs. Prices include taxes.

Doggie Daze is located at 36 Pulaski St. Call 203-504-2077 for more information.
