STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford Hospital has again been recognized as a “top performer” by a leading accreditor of healthcare organizations.

According to The Joint Commission -- a nonprofit organization that certifies more than 20,000 health care organizations and programs -- this is the second year in a row that the hospital has been awarded that honor.

Stamford Hospital, it said, is among only 9 percent of 3,300 such accredited institutions to “achieve excellence across six or more key quality care areas.” And it is one of only three hospitals in Connecticut to do so.

The medical and surgical areas the hospital was recognized for are: heart attack, heart failure, perinatal care, pneumonia, stroke and surgical care.

The achievement, said the hospital’s Dr. Rohit Bhalla, “demonstrates our staff’s ongoing commitment to excellence and the application of best practices in care delivery across the organization.”

This results in improved quality and safety and “positive patient outcomes,” said Bhalla, the hospital’s vice president of quality and chief quality officer.

“We are extraordinarily proud to be recognized by the Joint Commission as being among the top performers in Connecticut and the nation,” he added.

“Delivering the right treatment in the right way at the right time is a cornerstone of high-quality healthcare,” said Dr. Mark R. Chassin, president and CEO of the commission.

“I commend the efforts of Stamford Hospital for its excellent performance on the use of evidence-based interventions,” Chassin added.
