Valentine, Pavia Urge Caution in Snow

Residents should "be vigilant" steering through local streets and caring for property in the wake of Stamford's latest snowstorm, the city's new director of health and public safety said Thursday.

"Based upon the significant amount of snow that has fallen in the past several weeks, we are urging residents to be vigilant in their driving and maintenance of their personal property," Bobby Valentine said in a statement issued by the office of Mayor Michael Pavia. "We anticipate that the city's response to the storm will be ongoing throughout the day to ensure all streets are cleared as soon as possible."

Pavia also issued several precautionary reminders to residents: Shovel sidewalks in front of homes or businesses; approach snow-stacked intersections with caution; and remove snow and ice from decks and awnings to deter collapses. Pavia also requested that residents shovel trashcans from under snow cover to ease garbage removal.

The overnight storm caused school closings and canceled several events on the municipal schedule. The mayor declared a snow emergency, which prohibits parking on designated snow emergency routes. It currently remains in effect.
