Thunderstorms Could Dampen Start Of July 4th Weekend, Fireworks In Stamford

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — The potential for iffy weather could stamp out plans for the start of the Fourth of July holiday in Fairfield County, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers and thunderstorms are aiming toward the region and are already dampening some of the fireworks planned for Friday in the area.

Thursday's sunny skies will continue through the night, when showers and thunderstorms could show up mainly after midnight. Otherwise, skies will will be mostly clear, with cool air and calm winds in the evening.

Showers are likely late in the afternoon Friday, with increasing clouds, and rainfall amounts up to a quarter of an inch, more during thunderstorms.

The saturation could persist into the overnight hours, then showers will lessen toward Saturday morning. Skies will be partly cloudy, and air will be cool, around 59 degrees.

New rainfall amounts Friday night could add a quarter of an inch.

It will be brighter on Saturday with sunny skies, warm air in the high 70s and slight winds up to 13 mph. The night will be mostly clear, with temperatures down again to 59 degrees.

Sunday brings sunny skies, with a seasonal high near 79 degrees. It will be mainly clear overnight, with cooler air, making way for a sunny Independence Day on Monday, when 81 degrees will warm up things.

Monday night will be partly cloudy, bringing back a chance of rainy weather again on Tuesday. Otherwise back to work day will be partly sunny, with a high near 80.

The fireworks scheduled for Shelton on Friday have been postponed to Sunday, July 3. The show should begin at about 9 p.m. on the Riverwalk. 

Other fireworks set for Friday that could be affected by the unsettled weather include:

  • Danbury: The annual Danbury Fair Mall fireworks begin with a live show at 6 p.m. featuring a band from Western Connecticut State University, and later, a Top 40 cover band starting at 8 p.m. The fireworks are set for just after sundown.
  • Stratford : The fireworks begin at dusk at Short Beach Park with a rain date of July 5. The town of Stratford said a decision will be made at 11 a.m. Friday as to whether to postpone or proceed with the show.
  • Stamford: Cummings Park is the scene of Stamford's annual fireworks event, which begins at 6 p.m. with entertainment provided by More Than Music DJ Service. Fireworks begin around 9:15 p.m. with a rain date of July 2.
