Nor'easter Moves Out, But How Much Rain Fell In Fairfield County?

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Fairfield County will begin to dry out on Monday after a nor'easter pounded the region overnight, causing thousands of power outages and canceling school in some towns.

How much rain fell overnight? Here are some rainfall totals from the National Weather Service:

  • Westport: 4.97 inches
  • Shelton: 4.66 inches
  • Bethel: 4.47 inches
  • Danbury: 4.31 inches
  • Sandy Hook: 3.71 inches
  • Norwalk: 3.47 inches
  • Bridgeport Airport: 3.00 inches
  • Stratford: 3.00 inches
  • New Canaan: 2.58 inches
  • Stamford: 2.21 inches

The large power outages reported across Fairfield County were largely due to strong winds. Here are some of the highest wind gusts reported overnight:

  • Stamford: 65 mph
  • Old Greenwich: 64 mph
  • Bridgeport: 58 mph
  • Fairfield: 57 mph
  • Bridgeport Airport: 54 mph

The strongest sustained winds measured in Fairfield County were at Bridgeport Airport, at 38 mph.

Metro-North was reporting problems along the tracks due to the weather. Service is suspended Monday on the Danbury Branch due to a mudslide and signal problems and on the New Canaan Branch due to tree limbs. Buses are running in place of trains on both branches. 

Delays were also reported along the main New Haven Line.

Schools were closed Monday in Bethel, Brookfield, Newtown, Ridgefield and Westport, with delayed openings in Easton, New Canaan, Redding, Trumbull and Wilton. 

The forecast for Monday calls for the remaining light rain to end by noon, the National Weather Service said. But it will still be gusty outside, with a wind advisory in effect until 2 p.m.  

Winds will be 15 to 25 mph, with gusts of up to 50 mph across Fairfield County. The winds will be strong enough to blow down limbs, trees, and power lines. More scattered power outages are expected.

It will be mostly cloudy for the rest of the morning, then gradually become sunny and breezy, with a high near 55 degrees. 

Monday night will be mostly clear, with a low near 41 degrees and winds of 10 to 13 mph.

Tuesday will be sunny, with a high near 55 degrees. Temperatures will dip Tuesday night to about 35 degrees under clear skies. 

There is a chance of rain again on Thursday.
