Traffic Detour Begins At I-95 Off-Ramp In Stamford For Construction

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Expect several road closures in Stamford during the overnight hours this weekend as crews work to make improvements to the I-95 exit 8 off-ramp over Atlantic Street.

There will be a detour this weekend on I-95 in Stamford as part of the Atlantic Street bridge project.

South State Street, Atlantic Street and the northbound exit 8 off-ramp will be closed and traffic will be detoured around the construction area. Closures will be in effect from 9 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday.

South State Street will be closed between Guernsey Avenue and Canal Street. Atlantic Street will be closed between North State Street and Dock Street.

The project consists of making improvements to the I-95 exit 8 off-ramp and to the adjacent areas along Atlantic Street and South State Street in Stamford. The project is intended to improve the lane configuration along South State Street and provide a more efficient traffic flow exiting I-95, as well as improve the drainage in the area, according to the Department of Transportation.

The work will require temporary off-ramp lane reductions for the construction of the new exit 8 flyover bridge and retaining walls along the I-95 corridor between Atlantic Street and Canal Street.

The closures will be used to minimize the duration of traffic impacts and to expedite the work involved in lower the intersection of Atlantic Street at South State Street in anticipation of steel construction for the new off-ramp bridge, the DOT said. This "intermediate roadway lowering" is required to allow for the legal 13-foot 6-inch vertical clearance required for truck traffic.
