Accident Shuts Down Newfield Avenue In Stamford Through Tuesday Evening

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Newfield Avenue in Stamford will be closed through the evening commute from Newfield Drive to Weed Hill Avenue due to an accident that knocked down a utility pole, according to police.

The road is open to local traffic only.

The accident took place at around 11 p.m. Monday night when a 29-year-old driver from Stamford struck a pole near Sterling Farms and snapped it, knocking down wires, according to the Stamford Advocate. 

The accident caused significant traffic issues into the morning, and police were on scene directing traffic onto detours, the Stamford Advocate reported.

Police told the Stamford Advocate that the driver had two empty bottles of Oxycodone in his car and failed field sobriety tests administered at the scene.
