Westhill Football Forfeits 4 Wins, Causes Playoff Chaos

STAMFORD, Conn. – Westhill’s football team forfeited four wins for using an ineligible player and, in the process, has thrown the high school state football playoff possibilities into even more upheavel.

Westhill falls to 1-8 entering Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day game at Boyle Stadium against Stamford High (2-7). More importantly, however, the loss affects Trinity Catholic (7-2) in its Thanksgiving game at Wilton (10:30 a.m.).

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference posted the forfeits Tuesday on its website

Under the state’s point system, Trinity will need to win and have some outside help to reach the Class S Tournament. The Crusaders currently are ranked seventh, and eight teams make the tournament. The Crusaders lost some points due to Westhill’s forfeits. The game to watch for the Crusaders is the Northwest Catholic vs. Rocky Hill game. Northwest (7-2) is seeded ninth entering the game. If it beats Rocky Hill (8-1, fifth in Class S), it would slip past the Crusaders.

The other game of interest to the Crusaders is Prince Tech (8-1) vs. the combined team of Capital, Classical Magnet and Achievement First (9-0). Capital is seeded second, and Prince Tech is seeded sixth. Trinity could move past Prince Tech if it beats Wilton and Prince Tech loses. Before the forfeits, Trinity just needed to win to get in. Now, the Crusaders will need some help to make the state tournament for the first time since 1993.

Ridgefield and Fairfield Prep, who are locked in a tight race in a bid to reach the Class LL playoffs, also are affected by the forfeits. Ridgefield plays Danbury Wednesday, and Fairfield Prep plays West Haven Thursday.

Westhill had been having its best season since 2007, when it finished 5-5. Among the victories if forfeits is a 37-30 win against Trumbull, its first victory versus the Golden Eagles in 39 years.
