State Champs Drub Stamford Field Hockey

If the Stamford High School field hockey team was looking for an easy start to the season, it wouldn't find it against three-time defending state champions, Darien. Stamford struggled to get anything going on offense as it was handed a 9-0 loss.

Stamford goalie Katie Bailes had her hands full as Darien kept up an almost constant attack. She was frustrated and tired by halftime as Stamford struggled to clear it out of its zone. Bailes had a string of bad luck as well as four of Darien's goals were tip-ins that redirected into the net. Darien's Hollis Porticone and Leslie Gill caused trouble for Stamford. Porticone netted three goals with two assists, while Gill scored twice and added three assists.

Stamford will hope for better results at its home opener against Trumbull on Friday.
