Stamford's National Lione Wins After Wild Comeback

STAMFORD, Conn. – No lead was too great for Stamford’s National Lione Little League All-Stars to overcome Friday evening. Trailing Ridgefield National, 9-0, heading into the bottom of the third, Lione stormed back with an explosive eight-run fifth inning to shock Ridgefield, 16-12, in the last game of District One pool play.

The victory secured the second seed for National Lione in the district quarterfinals, which begin Sunday. Lione handed Ridgefield its first loss of the playoffs.

Trailing 11-6 in the top of the fifth, Lione sent 14 players to the plate, scoring eight times. Nine straight batters reached base as Lione rapped out six base hits and drew four walks in the inning to take the lead for good.

Ridgefield managed to load the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but John McDonald struck out the potential tying run to end the game.

Anthony Frangiose capped off the wild comeback with his second two-run home run of the night in the top of the sixth. He reached base five times in the game, going 2-for-2 with four RBI and three walks.

John Edwards finished 3-for-5 with three RBI. James Sassi went 2-for-5 with two RBI.

National Lione will take on its Stamford rival, Springdale, in the District One quarterfinals. The two teams will face off at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Caporizzo Field in Stamford.
