STAMFORD, Conn. -- Danielle Ward's three goals on the weekend, including two in six minutes on Saturday, earned her the National Women's Hockey League Player of the Week Award, the league announced Tuesday.

Danielle Ward of Stamford, who plays with the Connecticut Whale, was named the National Women's Hockey League Player of the Week after three goals in two games last weekend.

Ward scored three goals in Stamford-based Connecticut Whale's two victories last weekend, including a pair over a six minutes span during Saturday’s 4-3 win vs. the New York Riveters. She also opened the scoring in Sunday’s 5-3 victory over Buffalo Beauts.

Ward said she wasn't expecting the honor.

"I was pretty surprised about it," said the Stamford resident. "The season has been going great. It's my first time ever being on a winning team and I have awesome teammates so it's a lot of fun."

Ward, a native of Lansing, Mich., played with the University of Maine.

The Whale did not trail at any point throughout the weekend. Connecticut travels to Boston in a battle of the NWHL’s top two teams on January 17.

Ward joins teammates Shiann Darkangelo and Kelli Stack in being named players of the week during the league's first season.
