Stamford, Wilton Runners Pace New Canaan Race

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Stamford’s Jeff Watson and Wilton’s Mary Zengo paced the field Sunday in the 33rd annual Spring Equinox Race in New Canaan. A runner from West Point, N.Y., paced the field in the much longer Boston Blowout 30K race Sunday in Fairfield.

In the New Canaan 8K race, Watson ran home in 29:26, followed by Zengo in 30:31. Greenwich’s Andrew Jarombek took third, followed by Stamford’s Matt Cross and Westport’s Caroline Koenig. Norwalk’s Amanda Parrish was the third woman to cross the finish line.

In the 18.6-mile Boston Blowout, Daniel Schlich finished first as runners from the U.S. Military Academy took the top three places. The top area finisher was Westport’s Blake Benke, who finished fourth in 1:57:42, an average of 6:19 per mile. Schlich won the race in 1:51:48.

Brookfield’s Sara Belles led women finishers in 2:10:06. The top woman from the area was Darien’s Heather Pech, who ran 2:21:07. She was the fifth female finisher and first in the 50-59 women’s age group.
