STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Stamford American Legions Oscar Cowan Post 3 team won three games over the weekend to improve to 10-2 and take firm control of first place in Zone 4.
Stamford owns a 2 ½ game lead over Trumbull and Norwalk, which are both 7-4. Stamford has won seven straight entering its game Tuesday against Norwalk.
Stamford opened its weekend with a 6-3 win over Trumbull. Logan McCullough earned the victory, pushing his record to 4-0. Stamford jumped out to a 2-0 lead and then pushed home four runs in the fourth. The offense was led by Nick Palumbo, who had two hits and three stolen bases.
Stamford spanked Bridgeport, 15-0, on Saturday. Peter Dawson won his second consecutive start, pitching all seven innings and striking out a season-high 12 batters. Jeff Cortese led the offense with two hits and three stolen bases. Also contributing were Billy Druehl and Brandon Curto, who had a bases-loaded triple to put the game out of reach.
Stamford topped Bridgeport again on Sunday, 9-3. Stamford used a combination of Billy Murphy, Bryan Pieschel and Nick Palumbo on the mound to quiet the Bridgeport bats. The offensive attack was led by Billy Druehl, who had two more hits. Brian Pollack also had two hits and an RBI for Stamford
Stamford faces Norwalk Tuesday at 5:30 at City Annex Hall in Norwalk and again on Thursday at 5:30 at Cubeta Stadium. Stamford then has a doubleheader against Wilton at Wilton High School on Friday night starting at 5:30, followed by weekend games vs. Westport on Saturday at noon at Cubeta Stadium in Stamford and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at Staples High School.
