Stamford U17 Legion Remains Hot

STAMFORD, Conn. – Wilton snapped Stamford American Legion's nine-game winning streak , but the under-17 team regained its winning ways with a win in the nightcap of a doubleheader to maintain first place in Zone 4.

Stamford, 15-3, responded with a three-game winning streak heading into a game Wednesday at Westport.

Wilton cooled off Stamford with a 9-6 victory. The game was a continuation of a rainout, and Wilton scored twice in both the fourth and fifth innings to take command and halt Stamford's winning run.

The setback was only temporary. Stamford took the second game, 5-2, behind the pitching of Peter Dawson. He struck out three for his third win of the season. Bryan Pieschel and Brandon Curto, who both had a double and a single, led the offense. They also scored a run. After trailing early, Stamford Legion got a spark from Chris Soule, who, after drawing a walk, went first to third after an errant throw, which led to a change in momentum. Stamford Legion never looked back as it cruised to victory.Stamford came back the next day with a 2-1 win over Westport behind the pitching of Billy Murphy. He struck out three while earning his first victory of the season.

The offense was led by Nick Palumbo, who recorded three hits and scored a run. With the score tied at 1-1, Logan McCullough drew a key walk in a 12-pitch at-bat in the bottom of the sixth. After hitting into a fielder's choice, Brandon Curto stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Nick Dellasandro singled to score Curto with the winning run.

Stamford also defeated Greenwich, 11-5, on Tuesday.

Stamford travels to Westport Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. game. It also plays Fairfield on Friday at Notre Dame at 5:30, and has weekend games against Darien and Trumbull.
