Several Stamford athletes helped the Wilton Y Wahoos clinch their 25th consecutive Connecticut YMCA State Swimming Championship title. The Wilton Y Wahoos have won the Connecticut Y state championships every year since 1987. The team scored an impressive 4,837 points overall in the recent meet. Greenwich YWCA was second with 2,643 overall team points.
Noah Cheruk of Stamford took home gold in all three of his individual events, touching first in the 100 IM, 100 fly and 100 breast for the 9-10 boys. Teammate Jake Florio was eighth in the 50 free and 50 back and 11th in the 100 back.
In the 11-12 girls age group, Stamford's Amanda Conte was ninth in the 100 fly. Samantha Florio, swimming in the 11-12 age group, was 11th in the 50 free and seventh in the 50 breast. In the 13-14 category, Samantha Cheruk was first in the 200 breast, second in the 200 IM, third in the 100 breast and 200 free, ninth in the 200 free, and 12th in the 50 free. Gregory Shindel, 13, also rose to the championship occasion, posting personal bests in three individual events.
