Stamford Stuns Top-Seeded Branford in States

STAMFORD, Conn. — Few gave the Stamford Post 3 Senior Legion baseball team a chance in the American Legion Connecticut state tournament. Squeaking in as the 30-seed out of 33 teams in the tournament, Stamford survived two "play-in" games to reach the official double-elimination tournament held in Bristol and Middletown.

After Stamford won seven of its last eight games, the naysayers are turning their heads now. Stamford shocked Branford, the defending state champions and top-ranked team in the tournament, 3-0, on Saturday.

Tom Fabricatore spun a six-hit, complete game gem, keeping one of the most potent teams in the state off the scoreboard. Stamford got lots of help from Branford, too, scoring all three of its runs on errors. Eric Joyner made a game-saving catch in the bottom of the sixth, leaping at the wall and stealing a home run for Branford.

Stamford will play the role of heavy underdogs again, taking on tournament host and Zone 3 champion Middletown on Sunday at 6 p.m. Stamford's Fairfield County Legion rivals Greenwich, Norwalk and Trumbull also advanced to the winners' bracket.
